How we started
When Claudia began One Woman Winery in 2001, she knew at once that she wanted to showcase all the flavors of the land. This idea of using every part transformed into a passion for distilling as a means to use the residual grape must that was left after the winemaking process. After toiling all year in the fields Claudia and her Daughter, Gabriella felt it was unfair to not get another use out of the grape skins. Hence, our first Grappa (Eau D’Vie) took fruition. Since then Gabriella & her father, Frank Purita have been distilling a myriad of spirits from all of the herbs and fruits that are grown on the Southold Farm and sourcing additional on the highest quality grains and fruits.
Claudia’s roots began in Calabria, Italy on her family’s self-sustainable farm. Her work ethic and appreciation for the land and all it can provide is something she has passed on to her children. Flavor and sustainable cultivation, the exacting art of caring for the land in a low impact manner while nourishing it to blessed with superb crops is self-fulling. This is what drives us in all aspects of our businesses and farming. The farm and vineyard is proudly certified sustainable by the USDA since 2011.
In 2007 Claudia produced and bottled her first wines, small quantity and superb quality. Since then we have strived to continue along this motto, exacting and perfecting methods and recipes for their superior quality and flavor profiles that readily showcase each harvest.
Frank began brewing his own beer in 2009 with the same mentality – small batches, sustainably grown grains, and decerning flavor profiles. What began as a mission to craft a complex yet easy to drink lager quickly evolved into a brewing operation that spans from Triples to Stouts, some even incorporating grapes from Claudia’s vineyard.
The art of distillation of concentrating and melding flavors together is an exacting and expressive art. From distillations of single grape varietals that showcases each varietals nuances to the myriad of herbs that can be distilled for aromatics or flavors or even selecting the finest Long Island Sweet Corn. Each sip is an experience, each sip is a story of the farmers who toiled in rain and sun and the distiller who understands it all.
